Harnessing Distributed Intelligence in a Collective IQ
posted by Editor on Monday December 13, @06:49PM
Search Interfaces Greg Weiss writes: "While reading the wikipedia entry for Douglas Engelbart (father of the GUI, mouse inventor etc.), it said at the bottom that these days he was working on a broader problem, "Collective IQ" via his Bootstrap Institute. Given the power of the Internet to focus our collective attention (Drudge Report) and/or discussion (Slashdot) on something, and to filter out worthwhile thoughts via rating systems (Slashdot, various Blogs, Amazon/Epinions/etc), applying the hive mind seems like a vista with plenty of growth potential. Englebart does seem to understand the power of the Internet to make such things easier, although it's not clear that he understands the implementation or value of distributed moderation systems to that end. It's worth reading the Wikipedia Collective IQ entry. The intriguing thought is that we're not far off from tools with some collaborative capacity can be harnessed for intelligence in a way that goes beyond discussion (Slashdot) or knowledge (wikipedia).

I'd certainly, agree that most of the worthwhile thoughts have been filtered out of Slashdot, but perhaps that's not quite what you meant.

To say that englebart doesn't know the value of distributed moderation systems may be inaccurate. In my dealings with him he has always seemed consumately aware of current technologies. What i don't think he would acquiesce too is whether current slashdotalike systems offers anything tangible to his DKR's (Dynamic Knowledge Repositories). DKR's need a system that can guide and bring to a resolution multidimensional arguments - no software I know of today has the capability of representing consensual agreement.

The problem with multidimensional interfaces is that they will prove fruitless until we work out how to structure the multidimensional information underneath, so that it is appropriately interconnected and yet simultaneously linearised in a certain focus. But I have faith that despite how dull that sounds it will happen and the digital world will be revolutionised.
