New Release Of Croquet 3D Operating System
posted by Editor on Tuesday October 12, @04:11PM
Virtual Worlds This article on Slashdot reports that the Croquet project has finally shipped a developer release. Croquet is a software architecture designed to enable collaboration between users across the Web in a shared 3D space. Croquet is not merely a 3D user interface for visualizing file systems or web sites, but a complete development and delivery platform for doing real collaborative work in a distributed 3D space (see screenshots). It is totally object-oriented, so there is no distinction between the user environment and the development environment. Unlike managed virtual worlds such as Everquest or The Sims, Croquet is based on an ad hoc, peer-to-peer network. Users create their own 3D "home world" and form "spatial portals" to other worlds. Croquet is implemented in Squeak, a variation of the Smalltalk programming language. Details about the Croquet implementation can be found in the architecture overview and programmer's guide.
