Gnowsis is an early desktop client for developing the Semantic Web, in which RDF metadata is used to help describe web content. The idea is that the metadata will provide a richer means for determining relationships between pieces of web content than by merely following links. This is supposed to allow the content to take on meaning, and hence become "knowledge". Unlike Semantic browsers like MIT's Haystack, Gnowsis integrates with existing applications instead of replacing them, and includes modules for existing desktop tools such as Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla. The Gnowsis project has shipped an Alpha release that is ready for download. The design of Gnowsis is detailed in this thesis report (PDF), with a briefer introduction in this overview (PDF).
