This article in the Economist provides an update on the state of haptic interfaces. Most current applications of haptics are in medicine, where they are used in training devices for doctors. However, haptics are increasingly being used in consumer devices as well, including video-game controllers such as force-feedback steering wheels and joysticks. Because force-feedback processing is computationally demanding, the falling price of processing power will make it feasible to add haptics interfaces to more devices. Samsung will be introducing a mobile phone later this year that has different vibration settings depending on the caller's ID, and last month at SIGGRAPH, SensaAble demonstrated a touchable hologram.
