Concentric Navigation Interface Allows Users To Visually Build Information Maps
posted by Editor on Tuesday September 07, @06:58PM
Visual User Interfaces ztirom writes "a site called http://www.thecrystalweb.org - which is a "digital museum for the crystalline" - implements an innovative information system called "Liquid". have a look." The Crystal Web is an online virtual museum that features a Concentric Navigation (CONAV) interface for browsing exhibits. The approach allows users to build their own visual maps of knowledge and links between different subjects. A star-shaped navigator is used to combine different building blocks in 3D space that assemble streams of information to follow associations. In additional to simplifying navigation of complex hierarchical structures, the interface makes thought movements such as deduction, abstraction, contextualisation, association and metaphorical jumps visible and steerable. The CrystalWeb implementation requires Flash - click on the image labelled "Liquid" on the left side of the page, then click "Introduction" in the Flash window for a guided tour. The design is also explained with illustrations in this paper (PDF).
