Scopeware Folds As Others Take Up Pursuit Of Improved Knowledge Management
posted by Editor on Monday August 16, @07:08PM
Search Interfaces This article in the Herald Tribune / NY Times reports that Scopeware ceased operations in May when its backers decided not to try competing with search functions that will be built into the upcoming "Longhorn" release of Windows due in 2006. Scopeware had offered a commercial implementation of the Lifestreams information management system developed by David Gelernter, the distributed computing pioneer who has been one of the most vocal critics of the hierarchical method of storing data (see this comparison of Scopeware with Microsoft's OneNote). While Microsoft's entry into the knowledge management space may be daunting to those who try to innovate, the article points out that some promising tools for improving information management have become available. These include Lookout, an Outlook add-on tool for improved searching of mail folders (which was acquired by Microsoft last month); X1, which was developed by Bill Gross of Lotus Magellan fame; Zoot, which has been criticized by some for its complexity, but may become clearer with this new online tutorial; MindManager X5; and, of course, TheBrain.
