ActiveWords Interface Driven By User's Own Words
posted by Editor on Monday May 10, @07:05PM
Command Line Interfaces ActiveWords is an interface mechanism that allows users to directly connect words on the screen with actions related to the meaning of the words. While traditional GUIs require you to dig through nested folders and hierarchical menus to get what you already know you want, ActiveWords makes interaction more efficient by allowing you to apply your own language to the things you do with a computer. Like an "auto-correct on steroids", ActiveWords allows you to simply select or type the words related to what you want, and press a single key to initiate the action. For example, to find out the weather, you would simply type "weather" and press the ActiveWords Key to get the weather information. Here is more information about how ActiveWords works, an online demo (it is currently implemented as a Windows extension), and a vision of how it could evolve in the future.

Sounds like a new interpretation of the keyword navigaion/launching system introduced in Launchbar (http://www.obdev.at/products/launchbar/) which by the way is a great way to find just about anything.

Hi: Thanks for the virtual ink. We have looked at Launchbar, which only runs on the Mac, and tried to get them interested in building a version of ActiveWords for the Mac. We would like to think we do a lot more than Launchbar, and look forward to all comments, positive and negative. We also have a very active forum. www.activewords.com/forum Buzz of ActiveWords fame...

I was impressed by the text substitution feature. But I lack visual feedback on what the result from my typed word will give. And what if Active words misinterprets what I want to do. E.g. If I want to mail "Smith" and also have a document named "Smith". How do I pick the correct choice? That is where I can see where Active words can be improved.

If you type smith, and you have both a name Smith say in our Outlook agent and a document named Smith, we bring up a mini-directory with both choices. You toggle to the choice, hit enter and whammo you get your desired result. Try it, and you will see how we handle it.

ActiveWords allows you to name multiple actions with the same ActiveWord (e.g., "Smith"). When you trigger the ActiveWord "Smith" ActiveWords gives you a Directory of choices. (Semantic self grouping.) ActiveWords also allows you to name the same action with multiple ActiveWords. So, "news" can be associated with CNN, Foxnews, ABCnews. etc. When you triggger the ActiveWord "news" ActiveWords gives you a Directory of choices. (Semantic self grouping.) What's to improve? Then you may want to look at approcket, which is a pretty good clone of launchbar for the PC.

Not familiar with AppRocket, but we will check it out. My take is that you can't name it, and naming is a very powerful tool. Try how our stuff allows you to name computing events.
