New User Interface Environment Has No Boundaries
posted by Editor on Monday January 12, @11:53PM
User Interface Innovation No Boundaries or Rules is a new user interface environment that is designed to replace the everyday functionality of a range of conventional computer programs. NBOR is a self-contained environment that sits on top of the Windows, Linux and Mac operating systems, but doesn't use the native graphical user interfaces (GUI). Instead of using separate programs for different tasks, everything in NBOR is performed in the same environment, at the same time, using a single set of graphic tools called Universal Tools, which are based on familiar objects and intuitive ways of doing things, and run in a graphical environment called Blackspace. Here is an overview of how NBOR works, and this glossary provides an overview of various components in the environment. The NBOR software will retail for $299, and will initially run on Windows 2000 and XP. A Linux version will be released during the end of the first quarter of 2004, followed by a version for Mac OSX in the Fall. Update (1/16): (Thanks to an AC) OSnews has posted a review of Blackspace, including screenshots.

Not sure how they expect to sell a new post-pc GUI without any screenshots. The future is graphical/sensory, so their lack of screenshots is suspicious... so lets hope this isn't vaporware.

It would smell of hype if they had a decent website :D

Looks like they're doing some demo thing tomorrow (15th Jan):

Might be useful. Looks quite interesting, anyway...

    It looked interesting.
I waited for the demo to come out and tried it for 30 minutes.
It's good to see that some alternative UIs are considered and developped. But Blackspace didn't seem very powerful and not that intuitive to me so far.

Still waiting/hoping for interesting new UI concepts...

It's tremendously useless, but has a lot of potential. Primarily, I find that it would be useful for putting together quick, interactive presentations and slideshows, quick and dirty animations and a few other things. It seems rather flexible in many ways, but without any good documentation, it's far too difficult to learn how to use it effectively.

I'd rather play chess online at online chess :)
