Translucent Windows Coming To X Window System
posted by Editor on Monday December 01, @05:11PM
Visual User Interfaces zeitgeist writes "The folks over at freedesktop.org are working on bringing true translucent windows to X Windows. XDirectFB also is working on transparency in X. Until I was forced to use OSX, I thought this was soley eye-candy, but it turns out to be suprisingly useful. Check out the screenshots." This paper describes the technique in more detail. It solves the general translucency problem by assigning alpha values for pixels in occluding windows. These values are used to blend the occluding window contents with the occluded region for display.
