Trepia Instant Messaging Client Shows User Locations
posted by Editor on Tuesday July 08, @04:30PM
Geographic Interfaces Greg Weiss writes "There's a new IM client out called Trepia which attempts to take care of IP geolocation to show you people online whom you may not know but are physically located close to you. Originally designed for Wi-Fi proximity, they've shifted to attempt more generic landline geolocation. It's pretty new and raw, but a decent early attempt to merge geolocation with a killer app (chat). It's been written up/discussed on Slashdot, Wired, and elsewhere. (Screenshots here, but none highlight the geolocation interface which has changed within the last month since it was released.)"

I've built a couple of geolocation systems:

People tend to get paranoid about the technology, but they shouldn't. It's not very accurate, and just a bit of fun really.
