African Bushmen Track Animal Movements With Handheld Computers
posted by Editor on Monday June 16, @07:22PM
Information Appliance Interfaces This article in Wired describes the CyberTracker research project in the Kalahari Desert in Africa in which natives have been given handheld computing devices to track animal sightings. The San Bushmen are famous for their ability to decipher animal tracks and droppings. Using handheld computing devices, they can enter spoor readings and other observations through a simple user interface. The data is then transmitted via satellite to a central database, where it is correlated to produce a dynamic map of the location. Researchers use the data to study ecological relationships, animal behavior patterns, and poaching activity.
