This article from the BBC News describes the Amble Time project at the Media Lab Europe, which has developed a system that combines digital maps with information about walking speeds and time constraints. The software draws a bubble around the user's current location, showing everywhere that the user can walk to within a specified amount of time. The bubble is not a perfect circle, since the software considers street patterns and other physical features of the location to determine the accessible locations (see picture). When combined with background information about cities, the system could help users select train schedules or restaurants based on their current location.
