The Sims Online Struggling To Avoid Fate Of Real-Life Utopian Societies
posted by Editor on Wednesday February 05, @06:21PM
Virtual Worlds The Los Angeles Times reports that The Sims Online is falling well short of expectations, which generated this discussion on Slashdot. This editorial on Flaming Telepaths points out that The Sims Online actually has all the characteristics of real-life Socialist societies. Unlike alternative online communities such as Ultima Online, which has a thriving capitalist system that has even started to spill over into the real world, The Sims Online economy is a "basket case", there are no real jobs, there is no rule of law (while Sims cannot defend themselves), and the "government" endlessly promises that sacrifices will be rewarded in the future, but it never delivers in the present.

This article in Business 2.0 makes the case that naysayers should wait six months for players and developers to learn more about the evolving environment before making any declarations about the game's shortcomings.
