This article in Speech Technology discusses multimodal interfaces, which combine voice and touch interfaces with screen displays to enhance mobile user experiences. For example, a mobile phone user could initiate a call by speaking the name of the person they are calling into the device. A multimodal-enabled device would prompt the user to select the appropriate person from the mobile device’s display. In the future, this interchange between voice and visuals will open many opportunities for mobile network operators. However, the article suggests that multimodal interfaces will be introduced in manageable stages. First, users will have the choice of one interface or another. For example, users can now choose to place a call, i.e. voice, or send a Short Message System (SMS) message, i.e. text, but those modes are mutually exclusive. Next, users will have the ability to switch from one interface to another, possibly multiple times during the same session. Finally, users will be able to use different interaction modes in parallel.
