User Interfaces Will Differentiate Mobile Phones
posted by Editor on Friday September 27, @07:17PM
User Interface Experts This article on Wireless Newsfactor describes a new report that claims the mobile phone industry has been so worried about finding killer apps that it has neglected user interface design for its devices. In particular, operators have been too complacent about data services, relying on Short Message Service (SMS), Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) or audio-based services which fail to take advantage of robust data transmission capabilities. Instead, they should be focusing on creating a family of standard interfaces that can be reused in different mobile phones and PDAs, as well as extended to new devices such as wireless MP3 music players, digital cameras, and personal health monitors. The report praises NTT DoCoMo's i-mode 2G data service, which shows that the fine details are just as important as power and speed. Other key functions will include the ability for users to switch effortlessly from text-based screens to streaming audio/video to voice-powered interaction, and support for Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), which will enable functions such as instant messaging, "presence," and video calling.
