This BusinessWeek editorial speculates that Apple's OS X operating system will unleash a creative race to build innovative applications that could rejuvenate the stagnant PC market. The article points out that Mac developers have only begun to take full advantage of OS X capabilities. While the first crop of OS X applications were primarily retreads of established packages such as Office and
Quicken, a variety of new and exciting uses could emerge as developers really begin to exploit the power of its UNIX foundation. This will then prompt Microsoft to imitate -- and improve on -- Apple's innovations. Some leading-edge OS X applications mentioned include Karelia's Watson, a search engine that uses the Web to quickly look up and remember everything from local movie and TV listings to breaking news on stocks and companies (which reportedly "inspired" Apple's Sherlock service), and Creo's Six Degrees, a program that automatically connects related email messages, files and people so that users can quickly navigate through projects.
