THE Implementation Of Raskin's Humane Interface
posted by Editor on Tuesday August 06, @06:13PM
Command Line Interfaces Jef and Aza Raskin are implementing an editor called THE (The Humane Environment) based on the principles described in Jef Raskin's book The Humane Interface (see this summary). THE provides a simple editor for quickly creating drafts of documents with a minimum of effort and hassle. It drastically cuts down on the number of keystrokes and mouse moves it takes to do editing tasks compared with traditional GUI editors. THE is supposed to be as easy to learn as a GUI (or easier) yet as fast to use (or faster) than command-line systems. Mouse moves are used only when doing graphic operations such as resizing a window or working on a drawing or photo. The system draws on some elements of the Canon Cat, a pre-Apple system that Raskin worked on in which the user interface was based on a simple text editor in which all data was seen as a long stream of text broken into pages. THE is Open Source code, implemented in Python for OS-X, and is currently available as an alpha release. This manual is also available.
