Flawed Use Of Menus In Cell Phone Interfaces
posted by Editor on Monday July 01, @08:51PM
Information Appliance Interfaces This paper (PDF) examines the difficulties of using the menu structures in most cell phone interfaces. The combination of small form factors, limited input/output methods, and growing feature sets has resulted in devices that can be confusing to novice users. Most cell phones use hierarchical menu structures, which may require inexperienced users to search the entire tree to access a particular function. The paper investigates how well menu design research has been applied by current handset manufacturers. It then discusses some possible steps to improve handset interfaces, including allowing users to customize menu structures with variants of the traditional tree (so that they can be searched linearly, as an option), use of visualization, icons, and providing context information.
