The Digital Family Portrait project addresses the growing social problem of supporting older adults who want to continue living independently, instead of moving into an institutional care setting. The goal of the project is to provide a qualitative sense of a distant relative’s well-being, while striking a reasonable balance between privacy and the need for information. Like a traditional portrait, the digital frame is designed to be hung on the wall or propped on a mantle, blending with household decorations. But instead of simply containing a static image, the digital frame shows iconic representations of observations that would naturally occur to someone living next door or in the same home of the person in the picture (see screenshot). For example, the frame can show the weather at the person's location, indoor and outdoor temperatures, or indication of movement around the home. These simple pieces of information can be significant in assessing someone’s behavior; for example, the significance of having a slow day might be interpreted differently if it is raining outside. Here is a paper (PDF) on the research.
