LindenWorld is a new online world that will open to the public later this year. It is supposed provide an open-ended, "organic" alternative to existing multiuser online games such as Everquest or The Sims. While those games operate according to patterns set by programmers, LindenWorld is designed to evolve through the creativity of its users, who roam through its landscape in cartoon-style bodies, designing homes and artwork, chatting with other users, and customizing their clothes and appearances. More importantly, users are expected to invent their own games, social relationships and mock financial enterprises. The system is powered by proprietary new technology including the Linden Viewer, 3D Streaming, and Scalable Distributed Simulation. Participants create LindenWorld from within, utilizing powerful constructive solid geometry techniques with a simple interface (see screenshot). The Linden Lab engineers have already built sample structures like stores, office buildings and castles, as well as more surreal constructions like a workable chessboard and a hockey rink. The company has been written up in the Wall Street Journal, MSNBC, and the NY Times (free registration required).
