Graphical Interface For Very Large-Scale Conversations
posted by Editor on Tuesday June 18, @01:46PM
Visual User Interfaces Conversation Map is a Java-based newsgroup browser that is designed to make it easier for participants to understand and reflect on very large-scale conversations, such as large email lists, or busy USENET newsgroups. Conversation Map analyzes the content and the relationships between messages and then uses the results of the analysis to create a graphical interface (see screenshot). The interface allows a participant to see the social and semantic relationships that have emerged over the course of the discussion. Conversation Map computes and then graphs out who is "talking" to whom, what they are "talking" about, and the central terms and possible metaphors of the conversation. If you have Java installed, you can try out the interface on snapshots of several USENET newsgroups, including sci.environment, soc.culture.palestine, motleyfool, alt.politics.election, comp.lang.perl, soc.culture.afghanistan (snapshotted on September 27, 2002), and alt.tv.star-trek.voyager (snapshotted in March 2002).
