Eckoh is a voice-based Web portal in the U.K. that allows callers to send and receive e-mails, get entertainment and sports news, or do on-line shopping from any landline or mobile phone. Users pay their service provider for access based on the standard per-minute phone rate. The system uses full speech recognition that is supposed to recognize 19 spoken dialects in the U.K. The interface's voices have been given two personalities, including "Chantal", who is a "cheeky French au pair", and "Ronald", who is a "gangster". They are described as follows: "Chantal’s English a little iffy in places, but she is an absolute sweetheart who is really keen to help you out. She’s got a lovely manner, she won’t lose her temper if you have any problems. Ronald, on the other hand, doesn’t stand for any nonsense of any kind. But that’s alright because he’s on your side. And deep down he’s a bit of an old softie, despite outward appearances. He might have a moan every now and then but he’s OK when you know how to handle him." Here are Real Media samples for Chantal and Ronald.
