This page discusses Inter-Personal Awareness Devices (IPADs), which detect when people who are members of a particular group are in the same physical location. An example of such a device is the Hummingbird, which uses wireless communication to give group members continous aural and visual indications of which other group members are in the vicinity. Users wearing a Hummingbird can instantly know what other people are in the vicinity, even if they can not directly hear or see them. Whenever two or more Hummingbirds are in the vicinity of each other, they will "chirp," and the identity of other Hummingbirds in the vicinity will be shown on a display. The design of the Hummingbird device is discussed in this paper (PDF).
