Future Of Notebooks Hinges On Convergence
posted by Editor on Wednesday February 27, @04:35PM
Information Appliance Interfaces This article in Mobile Computing reveals some of the directions that laptop designers are taking to converge multiple computing devices for different tasks into one unit that transforms to meet different needs. For example, HP is showing a concept PC that starts as a conventional-looking clamshell notebook with keyboard and lid-mounted screen, but has a twisting display so that the user can present a slide show to a small group. The screen can also be flipped over entirely to become a tablet computer, complete with touchscreen. It can also become a desktop computer, snapping into an easel-like pedestal that can connect it to a keyboard, mouse and a network. The article also mentions the handheld Origami from Cocom International can be folded different ways to reveal different functions. If the screen is opened and tilted, it becomes a palm-size notebook; fold the lid shut and turn it over and it's a videophone. Other products discussed include the Personal Awareness Assistant, a small wearable system with two small microphones, an inconspicuous camera, and computing equipment small enough to fit in a pack around your waist. Using speech recognition and audio/video capture, this prototype is constantly recording your environment—acting as a sort of "short-term memory" that stores immediate experiences.
