This article on Yahoo describes how Japan's twin obsessions with fashion and technology could produce a breakout in wearable computing through a wave of "media fashion". Departing from the distinctly unstylish approach of most current wearable PC efforts, Pioneer has hired a designer from a Tokyo fashion college to help embed computers in trendy everyday clothes. The company has already developed a water-proof, ultra-thin, and fabric-like Organic Electroluminescent display that can be folded up without losing its functionality, so that it can be fitted into a jacket sleeve or the body of a handbag (the next challenge is to make it washable). So far the fabric has been used on a jacket with an embedded mapping application, and the developers next plan to add functions like music and cell phone capabilities. Some of the biggest financial backers of the effort include the local governments of Japanese prefectures that hope media fashion can help revive their once-booming garment towns. There are more articles about the project at the Tapei Times and ABC News.
