This paper describes Augmented Reality Quake (ARQuake), an extension to the First Person Shooter game Quake that converts it into an outdoor/indoor mobile augmented reality application. ARQuake runs on a low-cost wearable computer configured with GPS, a digital compass, and vision-based tracking to superimpose the Quake characters into the real world (see pictures). The traditional keyboard and mouse interaction with the game has been replaced with physical movement sensing and a functional toy gun, providing moderately accurate tracking in six degrees of freedom complete with recoil and sound effects. The paper discusses interface issues associated with the implementation, including monster selection, color, and input devices.
