Time Machine Computing
posted by Editor on Monday December 10, @01:57PM
Visual User Interfaces This paper (PDF) from Sony Computer Science Laboratories describes TimeScape, a system that uses time rather than space as an organizing mechanism (see also LifeStreams). Time-Machine Computing allows a user to visit the past states of their computer. The system automatically archives all of the user's activities on the system so that the their daily workspace is seamlessly integrated into an information archive. When users need to refer to a document that they were working on at some other time, they can "travel back" to the time they were last working on that document. The combination of spatial information management of the desktop metaphor and time traveling allows a user to organize and archive information without being bothered by folder hierarchies or the file classification problems that are common in today's desktop environments. TMC also provides a mechanism for linking multiple applications and external information sources by exchanging time information. Here are some more screenshots of TimeScape in action.

sorry- couldn't resist. I am not a troll really- I am a geek with a fondness for following running jokes beyond the point of most people's tolerance...

I'm not a robot like you. I don't like having disks crammed into me... unless they're Oreos, and then only in the mouth. -- Fry
