Virtual Talking Heads Bring Text Messages To Life
posted by Editor on Wednesday December 05, @12:13PM
Virtual Worlds LifeFX uses speech synthesis and virtual animated characters called Stand-Ins to present images of lifelike people that can move, talk and express emotion. You can use LifeFX to send special email messages called facemail, in which a Stand-In reads the message to the receiver using plugins that animate the lips and facial expressions of the characters (LifeFX calls their technology "Flash with flesh"). To send a facemail, you download some software which gives you a choice of five Stand-Ins that will read the message (if you have a microphone, you can also record the message so that the Stand-In will use your voice to read it). When the user receives the facemail, they can download a free player to view the transmission. The company is developing additional Stand-Ins (see the gallery ) and has made a deal with Kodak to develop a LifeFX service bureau where people can send in a photo of themselves and create a Stand-In with their own face that will be able to display a wide variety of expressions. According to this Newsbytes article, the company envisions that people will use the technology to create "living memories" with their face and voice for future generations to remember how "grandma and grandpa" met.
