Enchantment is a design for a practical wearable user interface. It assumes that the targeted wearable hardware includes both a heads-up display and an input device suitable for text, i.e. a quarter-VGA screen and a Twiddler keyboard, with a nonexistent or minimally functional pointing device. Enchantment makes the assumption that the user will remain in primary control of the system at all times. Context-sensitive agents are given a background role, offering hints and reminders, but never grow into a controlling influence. The design relies on quasimodes described in Jef Raskin's Humane Interface, i.e. modes that are entered and maintained through a conscious and extended user action (such as the shift key on a keyboard). Although Enchantment has not yet been implemented, the specification does a good job reviewing the constraints facing designers of wearable computing UIs. It also contains some mockups of screenshots.
