Increasing Text Reading Speed With Rapid Serial Visual Projection
posted by Editor on Wednesday October 31, @11:15AM
Command Line Interfaces GnomeRSVP is an Open Source implementation of a Rapid Serial Visual Projector similar to commercial products like AceReader. Rapid Serial Visual Projection is the process of blasting words onto the screen. In this dynamic representation of text, each word is flashed on the screen one at a time in succession. The reader is less inclined to "oralize" the text, and instead interprets whole words as meaningful written symbols. It also eliminates the automatic re-reading of adjacent previous text, which results in much higher reading speeds than are possible with standard techniques. GnomeRSVP can currently be used to display PDF and HTML documents at a rate of 120-6000 words per minute. There are screenshots here, and the code can be downloaded here.

RSVP (Rapid Serial Visual Projection) (Score:1)

We evaluated a RSVP product called Rapid Reader for potential value in a wearable computing system. It offers the advantage of displaying a lot of text in a very small space -- good for mobile displays. We found that you could read VERY rapidly, but you really had to pay close attention to it. It was difficult to walk and read at the same time, and if something distracted you for even a few seconds, you lost the "thread" of the text. A good tool for reading headlines while standing in line at the bank...

that seems to be the trade off. RSVP require little space and are suitable for small displays (i.e. wearables) but the concentration level required is so high that it almost negates the benefits. i'd like to test it some more on my laptop... your point about standing in line is great tho... standing in queues frequently, i could get alot of reading done.. ;)

I'm not a robot like you. I don't like having disks crammed into me... unless they're Oreos, and then only in the mouth. -- Fry
