posted by Editor on Saturday October 27, @11:49AM
User Interface Innovation Lars Erik Holmquist writes "This Ph.D. thesis in Informatics contains 6 chapters on various forms of post-PC user interfaces. The innovations presented in the thesis include:
  • "Flip Zooming" - a tile-based focus+context visualization technique (PDF).
  • "Hummingbirds" - a wearable "friend finder" that gives users an indication when their friends are nearby (PDF).
  • "Token-based interaction" - an analysis of systems where physical "tokens" are used to represent digital data (PDF).
  • WEST - A Web Browser for Small Terminals (PDF).
  • "
The first chapter introduces the concept of "Breaking the Screen Barrier" and post-WIMP user interfaces, and describes the research approach taken. The complete thesis can be downloaded from http://www.viktoria.se/play/publications/2000/phd/leh/. More information on related research can be found at http://www.playresearch.com/"
