Jakob Nielsen is considered one of the industry's leading gurus on usability. He was a Sun Microsystems Distinguished Engineer until 1998, where he earned 59 U.S. patents on ways to make the Internet easier to use. Now, he runs the Nielsen Norman Group with Don Norman, the former VP of research at Apple Computer, and Bruce "Tog" Tognazzini, who founded the Apple Human Interface Group. Nielsen's site useit.com is considered one of the main sources of wisdom on user interface design. In this new interview with The Register ("Biting the hand that feeds IT"), he reveals his thoughts on a few current UI issues, including WAP, web services, and bloatware. He also describes how Apple "blew it", what Linux's prospects are on the desktop, and (somewhat cryptically) what the Next Big Thing (NBT) will be.
