Recreating The Real World In Virtual Space
posted by Editor on Wednesday October 10, @05:34PM
Geographic Interfaces The Virtual Terrain Project provides a set of Open Source tools that can be used to construct any part of the real world interactively in 3D. The current tools include BExtractor, which can be used to extract USGS topographical maps, VTBuilder, a virtual terrain builder that can manage elevations, roads, buildings, and vegetation, and Enviro, which provides an interactive, realtime 3D navigation for the generated virtual terrain. The code to VTP is released under an Open Source license similar to the MIT/X license, and it has been ported to Win32, FreeBSD, Linux, and Irix. Here are screenshots from some of VTP's demo programs. There is also a good collection of resources on creating virtual terrain systems, as well as a set of pointers to free geographical data representing various places around the world. The long-term goal of the project is to eventually enable an implementation of David Gelernter's Mirror Worlds.
