Visually Discovering Relationships In Large Databases
posted by Editor on Monday September 24, @09:25PM
Data Visualization VxInsight is a tool developed at Sandia National Laboratories for discovering relationships within large databases through visualization. VxInsight reveals the implicit structure of text data through 3D graphics, representing the content of a collection of documents through peaks and valleys, where "mountains" express the most commonly encountered concepts (see screenshot). As you move closer to a mountain, it is possible to see the gross structure of that concept resolve itself into several smaller subfields, which become visible as another set of small peaks. This process can be continued right down to individual documents. At the lowest level, you are able to see the citation linkages between the papers. This allows you to instantly identify the most important, foundational papers in the literature. The approach can help analysts who are sifting through very large amounts of text data uncover strategically important connections and patterns (it shouldn't be surprising that these techniques were developed for a government agency - no doubt, these kinds of tools are being heavily used right now).
